In 1906, a group of 23 young Christians met in their homes for prayer and Bible study. Feeling led by The Holy Spirit, they formed a church located on Hudson Avenue in Detroit. And so, the Hudson Avenue Baptist Church was founded.
As time went by, the church grew and in 1923, the congregation moved to the corner of Clarendon and Grand River (also in Detroit) and changed the name to Northwestern Baptist Church..
Then, in the 1950’s the church began a mission in Southfield that led to our building on 10 Mile and Evergreen, where membership grew and thrived for many years,
But as times changed, many families grew up and out of the area. Northwestern Baptist Church sold the 10 Mile Rd. building, which was now too large to be effectively supported by the smaller congregation. Refusing to be discouraged, the remaining Church Family moved to a temporary home at the Judson Center in Royal Oak.
During this time (1997), the church called a new pastor (Rev. Jane Moschenrose) and started looking for property or an existing building to fulfill the needs of the church as well as the needs of the community, searching for the ideal location to implement growth and mission opportunities. Finally! In 2001, we found the property on 8 Mile Rd. in Farmington Hills. After much prayer and walking the property many times, it was settled. This would be our new Church Home!
Construction began in the fall of 2002. With great joy and a whole lot of work and prayer, we opened for our first service in September of 2003. With this new beginning, it seemed appropriate to choose a new name: Now, we are Wellspring Church. This name was based on the following scriptures: John 4:14 “(Jesus said) those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give them will become in them, a spring of water gushing up to Eternal Life”, Proverbs 16:22 “Understanding is a fountain of life to those who have it.” and Proverbs 18:4 “The words of mouth are deep waters, but the fountain of wisdom is a gushing stream.” . Our beautiful stained glass window was hand crafted especially for Wellspring Church. It was commissioned and donated by Pastor Jane and her husband, Dr. Phillip Moschenrose in celebration of the building of our new church home. After all: "Every church needs a beautiful stained glass window!" The Wellspring Window visualizes and notes that the power in flowing waters to shape and affect that which it passes over is unceasing: sometimes quiet and gentle, otherwise noisy and rough and terrifying. Likewise, God’s power is unceasing: other times gentle, sometimes terrifying, but always essential to life. The scene of water in the stained glass window flows to and from the cross. Central in the scene is the cross symbolizing the centrality of the cross in our lives as Christians. The stones in the water represent the difficult times we inevitably face in life. Though the stones affect the water, the water continues to flow nonetheless just as Christ’s life-giving water is always present in the events of our lives. In Sept. 2006, Wellspring Church celebrated its 100th anniversary as an American Baptist Church. We look forward to the next 100. In the meantime, we will continue to live by our pledge: To worship the Lord, Grow as Disciples, Share God’s Love, Serve All People and Spread the Good News..!!!!
